A beautiful walk through rice paddy fields brings you to the plain of jars site 3. A wide range of jars under a canopy of trees - many are fully intact. Very picturesque

Jars of the Dead ⚫For years, researchers have been puzzled by the discovery of giant jars filled with dead bodies spread across hundreds of square miles in Loas, southeast Asia. ⚫A team of researchers from the Australian National University have discovered -in May of this year- 15 more sites in Laos containing 137 jars and are about 1,000-year-old. ⚫Also The team found a collection of beautifully carved discs which they believe were meant as grave markers, yet the discs were found buried with their decorated side face down. ⚫Another bizarre finding were miniature jars that were replicas to the giant ones, but instead were made out of clay. ⚫These mini jars were buried in the giant jars perhaps with the dead. ⚫Other artifacts that were found inside the burials include glass beads, decorative ceramics, iron tools, and spindle whorls used in cloth-making. ⚫However, it is still unclear what the original purpose of these “jars of the dead” were, and who were the people that brought them to these locations. ⚫Some of the jars weigh several tons, and many of them were brought to their resting places from quarries miles away.

Best way to visit the site is by motorbike so you make stops along the way. The scenery on the road leading to site 2 and 3 are wonderful. Lots of mosquitos around the jars, make sure to have adequate clothing and or mosquito repellant. I arrived 9 in the morning and apparently no one there, not even the ticket officer, so I had to wait for a bit. But its nice that I can have the place for myself for an hour.

This was my favorite of all three jars sites. You have to weave your way through rice fields tucked beside mountains to find the jars hidden beneath a small forest. When I went in the low season I had the entire site entirely to myself.

This is least visited of the 3 jar sites. You have to cross a small wooden bridge and a few rice fields to reach the site. It is about half a kilometer walk from the parking area. Reasonably priced lunch is available at the parking.
