The best thing about this airport is that it's easy to leave and go for a walk to the nearby beach and cafes. There's not much else to do while you're waiting on a domestic connection and the seats are hard steel affairs. Fortunately, the international departures 'terminal' has a lounge and a bit more going on.

Rarotonga International Airport (IATA: RAR, ICAO: NCRG) is the Cook Islands' main international gateway, located in the town and district of Avarua, Rarotonga, 3 km west of the downtown area on the northern coast. Because of the close proximity of the runways to the nearby roads, it is possible to get very close to the aircraft while they are departing and landing. Runway 08, which is at the western end of the runway, in particular is often very popular when a large jet is landing. History In 2003, the terminal and departure and check-in areas were revamped at a cost of US $650,000.[1] An $8.5m reconstruction project commenced in 2009 to revamp and expand the existing terminal facilities. The new-look terminal was officially opened on 22 June 2010.

Overall a nice airport, but customs takes a long time for international arrivals. There are a few coffee/pastry type shops around the terminal. It's VERY easy to walk from international inbound arrivals to domestic terminal... it's just a short walk to another building.

Nice little island airport. Quick trip through customs and immigration, friendly staff, live music at the luggage carousel. Easy trip on the way out too, and a stamp on the passport in both directions. Check in opens late and baggage storage is expensive. Cheap parking.
