The single-span Stone (Kamenny) Bridge over the Griboyedov Canal in Pea street was built in 1776 under the direction of I. Borisov. Since then, it has remained without alterations. The bridge was named Stone Bridge because the walls, the arch and other parts were built of stone. All the then existing bridges in the city, with the exception of Kazan, were made of wood.

In the summer of 1880 the revolutionaries of society "Narodnaya Volya" laid dynamite under the bridge, intending to blow up the bridge at the time of passage of the crew of the Emperor Alexander II. However, the attempt had not been carried out, as there was no certainty that the explosives were really powerful enough for the bridge collapse. Seven pounds of dynamite hidden in four gutta-percha pillows were recovered from the bottom of the channel in the spring of 1881, after the death of the emperor, during the investigation of the "Case of sixteen."
