Enjoyed our time in Papa Westray Airport. Within the vast concourse you can while away any delay in the games zone or the separate food hall where all the usual big names are represented, but also a number of trendy artisan scottish cook houses. There are also rotating art-sculpture displays, often highlighting Scottish artists which is nice. It's good that such a huge operation as this international airline hub works to integrate with the local community like that. Signage and seating are good; Arrival boards are state of the art but possibly not enough of them in all areas, although the airport has its own app you can download with live virtual boards. Non-fliers can access the observation deck overlooking runway three, which seems to have A380s and other widebodys arriving every ten minutes. There's talk about an additional runway being built to meet demand, but government approval could take years, not to mention the vociferous campaign group which is lobbying against the expansion and the damage it might do to the island's environment. For a treat while waiting for the long-haul to Westray, we paid to access the executive lounge. At first we couldn't find it but heard it was out at the north sector in Terminal 5 (by the cow shed). Thankfully, moving walkways are there to save your legs. One was out of action when we were there, but staff were letting people hitch a lift on the baggage buggies, which was fun. Shopping options are very good, before and after customs. Boots, duty-free and several high-end accessories houses have concessions there. It was nice staring into the Gucci and Prada shops but we couldn't afford anything. Standard wi-fi is free but for £1.00 you can access the high-speed secure option. Below the main plaza is the underground rapid transfer station where the amazing self-driving carriages whisk you and luggage to the main public transport hub (known locally as 'the road'). Alternatively, directly outside is the taxi rank, where there'll always be several dozen authorized cabs lined up (avoid the unauthorized ones). Looking forward to our next visit and exploring more of this impressive airport.
